On 17th and 18th August 1989 Tom Jennings, director Rimas
Vainorius, a cast of 1000s (!), a film crew and a huge truck blazed
the trail for the EuroTunnel to link England to the rest of Europe.
They invaded Dover for the first round of filming and once that was
completed they then all took the ferry (EuroTunnel hadn't been built
of course!) to Calais and filmed at the EuroTunnel site and the
surrounding countryside. Tom, who has a full trucker's HGV 1 licence,
played, EuroTrucker, the driver who was travelling on the
EuroStar through the EuroTunnel for the first time. The resulting
corporate video was used to raise the necessary funding. The
EuroTunnel was destined to become one of the great engineering feats
of not only the late 20th century, but of all time. Tom Jennings is
proud to have played his part in this amazing project. He was, in the
virtual sense anyway, the very first passenger on EuroStar and the
very first traveller to go through the EuroTunnel!!! Back to reality,
it was opened in 1994 and in 2006, 7.8 million travellers made the
journey from London to Paris, France and to Brussels in Belgium. In
June 2006 Tom made his first actual journey on the Eurostar to visit
Brussels on business. He said, "It was a breathtaking and luxurious
journey and I would highly recommend it."
